Reiki comes from the Japanese
for "universal life energy" and is a form of spiritual
healing. It is supposed to have originated as a branch of Tibetan
Buddhism, and was re-discovered by a Japanese minister, Dr Mikao
Usui in the late 19th Century. Practitioners draw on "reiki
energy", channelling it to areas of need in themselves and
their patients. It aims to promote health, well-being and raise
consciousness. Practitioners claim that reiki acts on an atomic
level, causing the body's molecules to vibrate with higher intensity
thus dissolving the energy blockages that lead to disease.
Reiki can also be used as a form
of absent healing as it is said to have an affect at a distance.
